CHAPTER TWENTY-ONE

Wednesday Evening

As she walked through the backdoor into what had become her kitchen, Katherine heaved a monumental sigh. The Two Towers had proven as mesmerizing as ever, and Grace’s company equally so, but Katy’s nerves had begun to scream somewhere between dropping off Grace and shopping at Trendy Mart.

Back home now, with the time nearing six-thirty, she was hungry and growing steadily crabby. The weight of the last three days, the grief of her aunt’s passing, and the strain caused by poor sleep all stomped on her brain with both feet. She’d call Josh and see if he was ok with pizza. He could watch the movie she’d rented, and she could sleep. Not an exciting evening, but right now it was the most she felt she had to offer.

To her surprise, someone knocked on her front door.

Oh, not now, she thought, dropping her keys onto the table along with her shopping bags. It was still light outside, and she could see two shadows on the ivy-covered front portico. Jehovah’s Witnesses, she thought as she switched on the porch light. The perfect capper to my day.

“Hi!” her neighbors said with genuine smiles.

Bill and Helen Markham.

“Hi, yourselves,” Katy answered, finding her own voice had genuine delight. They were, after all, very nice, likeable people. “Come in!”

Helen looked at Bill. “Oh no, you just got home. We just thought you’d want your packages.”

Katy slapped her forehead. “The FedEx stuff! I’d forgotten! It’s been a day and a half. I’ll come over and get them, thanks!”

Bill lifted his long arms, revealing two white packages. “Got ‘em here. Shall I bring them in?”

Katy nodded, opening the screen door widely enough for the pair to move inside.

“From Apple Computer?” Bill asked. “Not trying to be nosy, but I use Macs myself. I’m always looking for another Mac nut.”

“Guilty,” Katherine replied. “One of these boxes has an Airport Extreme inside. I’m going wireless.”

“Now you’re talkin’!” Bill gushed. Helen gave him a sharp look. “Well, you’re busy. But I’d love to talk Apple with you soon. Maybe this weekend?”

“Sure. Why don’t we get together on Saturday?”

Helen nodded. “That would be really nice. We have a couple coming in Friday night, but we’ll be free after breakfast. Why don’t you come over for lunch?”

“Sounds good. Noon?”

“Noon will do fine,” Helen said. “Bill, we should let Katy open her boxes in peace. Come on. Goodbye, Katy!”

Bill reluctantly followed his wife out the door, and Katherine closed the screen behind them. She decided to leave the main door open for a bit. The evening was warm, and the gentle breeze and scent of flowers from the front garden soothed her soul.

Although the temptation of the white boxes was strong, Katherine’s own hunger was stronger. She decided to call Josh to see if he’d bring that pizza. Extra-large with lots of pepperoni and mushrooms.

She retrieved her packages from the kitchen and found the brand-new cordless phone she’d purchased on sale. Within ten minutes, she’d plugged it into an outlet she’d discovered behind the china hutch in the kitchen and had started the initial charging process.
